On November 17th, International Students' Day, events will take place at universities across the world to demonstrate solidarity with Iranian students, academics and scholars. We will honor their bravery and struggles for basic human and civil rights. For more than seventy years, Iranian students and academics have been one of the leading defenders of basic freedoms and rights. For this, they have paid dearly, with imprisonment, torture, rape and their lives. Following the June 12th elections and the brutal crackdown on peaceful protestors during last summer, students and scholars, along with others including the members of women’s movement, once again led the struggle. Global solidarity continues to pressure the government of Iran and other governments in their relations with the government of Iran, in order to hold accountable those who have jailed, raped, tortured, and murdered the Iranians demanding their civil and human rights. And although the mainstream media has failed to cover the ongoing struggle, it continues to exist in Iran. Since the universities have opened in late September, Iranian students have again assumed a brave and active voice. Chants in dormitories and outcries in lecture halls, and on campuses throughout the country, occur regularly. One brave honor student voiced his grave concerns about the Supreme Leader while being broadcast nationally. These brave women and men are risking their lives and future. Leave a message, and let’s support these courageous students and academics in every way we can. |

The people of Iran show great courage and love for their country. I am proud to see their fight towards freedom. I am proud to hear their voices in the streets. I am proud to say I am Iranian, just like them.

Dear students of Iran,
It was in the post-election protests of early June that I first began following your struggle, both horrified and amazed by what I saw. After reading the account of one young student who told his story on Twitter, I found I could not turn away. Since then not a single day has passed where I have not read tweets, followed links, and downloaded videos, hoping that perhaps this might be the day you gain your freedom.
Students of Iran, you have showed the world the true face of your country and your people: a brave, freedom-loving and deeply human one, as opposed to the inhuman, brutal face of the regime. Since June I have become deeply interested in Persian culture and have begun learning your language. It is my dream someday, when your fight for freedom is at last victorious, to travel to Iran and see your country and people - the bravest in the world - for myself.
Thank you for showing us all true bravery and heroism. For shaking many (myself in particular) out of the narrow-minded, insular, self-centered mindset that is the dark side of our own culture, and showing us what human beings are capable when they fight for what is truly worthwhile in this world: love, compassion, and freedom.
I am here and will be watching to the end. Ma hame ba ham hastim...ma bishomarim. We are the students of the world and we are together. Azadi!
